Wisconsin State Fair Has a Pastry Mascot

Author: Gail Leino

The first half of August brings a highpoint of the summer to suburban West Allis, Wisconsin. Located near the I-894 and I-94 interchange it can be easily accessed from all points. The fair was originally located in Janesville in 1851 and moved to the current Milwaukee area location in 1892. Perhaps the most unusual aspect of this fair is the pastry mascot named Cravin' D. Cream Puff in a contest in 2005.

The Agricultural Division has the stated mission of serving the needs of farming youth. They have added a no-holds-barred Livestock Barn in 2003 that is nothing less than an engineering feat. The building houses horses during the state fair in a two-story 64,800 square foot facility. Foremost Farms milking parlor is located on the first floor. This "barn" allows for 5,000 pounds per 40 square feet of stall space. It will remain a testament to the state's commitment to the future of agriculture for many years to come.

The RV Park at the Wisconsin State Fair grounds is the only RV camp grounds in the county. Its 70 camp sites offer some full service and some electric only sites. RV parking is allowed nightly for under $30 or year around for the monthly rate from $500 - $750.

The 18,000 square foot Masters Spas Pavilion is the place to find the Wisconsin State Fair's signature Foods: State Fair Cream Puffs and Blue Ribbon Brownies.

Another fairly unique building is the Pettit National Ice Center. This and the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center, offer facilities for the sports and recreational needs of Wisconsin's young people.

This State Fair has developed into one of the best in the nation over the years. Along with the showcase of local talents visitors will find rides, shows and famous acts.
