Treat Adult Acne with an Over-the-Counter Plan

Author: Gail Leino

Many sufferers of adult acne are at a loss as to how to treat acne and prevent it from coming back. Often times folks will hop, skip and jump from one acne treatment method to another over the course of a couple days. This will certainly cause frustration and will likely further irritate the skin from using so many different methods at once. Before you try any plan you need to be committed to it and only it for a couple of weeks to help you determine if what you are doing is really working or if you need to move on. It may seem like a long time to wait but if you continue to bounce around on different methods your adult acne persist even longer.

There are three basic parts to treat adult acne
Killing the acne causing bacteria
Removing clogged pores
Reducing inflammation

Plenty of different drugs and herbal remedies claim to do each of these three things in the treatment of adult acne. Of all the best over the counter killer of acne causing bacteria has to be Benzoyl Peroxide. Its available in cleansers, masks and lotions. The Salicylic Acid that you may have seen listed on your popular name brand cleansers is good at loosening clogged pores. You can also try using facial scrubs and gentle exfoliators to help loosen and open clogged pores. And a common over the counter anti-inflammatory for adult acne is sulfur, although you may feel just as comfortable calming your skin with a wash cloth soaked in green tea.

You should work to kill the acne bacteria first. If you dont have Benzoyl Peroxide, soap and water work as well at getting the acne bacteria as it does any other kind of bacteria. Next try removing or loosening clogged pores with a daily scrub. You can usually perform the first two steps with a good exfoliating cleanser. Or you can try a pore cleansing mask to help loosen clogs. Lastly calm your skin and reduce the inflammation with an anti-inflammatory such as the Green tea.
