Fathers Day Celebrations Across the World

Author: John Gibb

Fathers Day is celebrated in some form or another in almost every country around the world. However, some of these celebrations are a little more unique, shall we say, than others.

In Korea, there is no Mothers Day and Fathers Day, only Parents Day. This means that they cant conspire with their mother on Fathers Day or vice versa they have to go out and find presents for their parents themselves, with their friends, and often come back with some interesting finds! Korea has a Childrens Day too, when parents buy special gifts for their children and take them on trips.

In Russia and many former Soviet Union countries, Fathers Day is known as Defender of the Fatherland Day. Originally a World War II remembrance holiday, it has now become a holiday to celebrate men in general, much like International Womens Day is for women. You can buy presents for your father, husband, boyfriend or any other man who is important to you on Defender of the Fatherland Day trust me, it sounds less strange in Russian.

In Denmark, Fathers Day is a public holiday, as it is also their Constitution Day. This gives fathers an opportunity to spend the whole day with their kids, making Fathers Day a much more important occasion there than it is in countries where dads have to work on the day. Germany does it a similar way, holding Fathers Day on the public holiday of Ascension Day.

The Chinese have something called baba. The Chinese word baba, meaning father, sounds like the Chinese word for the date 8th August, so they hold Fathers Day on that day it makes it much harder to forget!

However you celebrate Fathers Day, have a good one.
