Mother's Day: How to Choose the Perfect Gift

Author: Lauren Stomel

Every woman loves jewelry, and a custom made gemstone ring can carry much sentimental value as a Mothers Day gift. The most popular form of birthstone rings is called a mothers ring.

A mothers ring is the perfect way for any child to express their love and gratitude to their mother. Each birthstone set in the ring symbolizes the birth month for every child in the family, with a wide range of birth stone colors. It is a treasured piece of family jewelry that she can cherish forever, and know that her children are always near.

There is a rich history of legend and symbolism behind family rings in general, and especially those that contain birth stones, such as gold mothers rings:

A symbol of relationship:
Since ancient times, rings have been recognized as a symbol of relationship, or a bond between the giver and the wearer of the ring. The perfect circle of a gold mothers ring represents continuity, as in the eternal return of the seasons. The shape of a circle has always been a metaphor for faithfulness, unity, eternity or perfection, and there are many examples of this in prehistoric rock art. Birth stone rings evolved from this tradition

The magic of family birthstone rings:
Gem stone rings and jewelry with enchanted powers have always played a large role in ancient folk tales. As the legends took hold, each gem became associated with specific powers, and birth month, was designated by a gemstone, which represented the personality traits of a child born under that sign.

In a mystical sense, the woman who wears a personalized mothers ring is protected or empowered by the personality traits of each of her children. For example a sapphire (the September birthstone) is said to be the gem of heaven because its deep blue color was associated with the night sky. The personality trait of sapphire is innocence, and the wearer is empowered with purity of soul.

Where is the best place to purchase a Mothers Ring?
To get an idea of the different setting styles and prices that are broadly available in a mothers ring it is easy to view them online before shopping around at various local jewelry stores.

Retail jewelers will sometimes carry a modest selection of mothers rings, but you are most apt to find them at a local jeweler rather than a big chain store (the big chains dont like to carry them because they are always a "special order" item). There are also several reliable websites that specialize in mothers birth stone rings.

How much should I pay for a mothers ring?
The cost of a personalized mothers ring is mostly dependant upon the gemstones set in the ring. Most retailers and e-Commerce sites will allow you to order your family ring with either simulated or genuine gemstones. Often the cost of genuine birthstones is not much more than simulated gemstones, it just depends on the months when the members of your family happen to have been born.

If the ring setting is a good, heavy weight quality in 14K gold, and it is set with three or four simulated gemstones it should cost about $195. The same ring set with genuine birthstones, in most cases, would cost about $250. The exceptions to this rule are if you have a child with the birthstone of April (diamond) or May (emerald). Either of these precious gemstones can raise the price of a Mothers Ring by $75 or more, depending on the size of the stone.
